Feeling tired all the time can start to feel like just a part of life — especially after a long day at work or an evening spent keeping up with family. But constant fatigue usually isn't something you have to accept. More often than not, it comes down to a handful of daily habits working against you.
Late-night snacking can backfire
Reaching for a snack right before bed is often less about hunger and more about a lack of energy — which usually means your body is telling you it needs sleep, not food. Any energy from that late snack that your body doesn't use gets stored as fat rather than turned into next-morning energy, and sugary snacks in particular can make it harder to wind down and fall asleep in the first place.
Evening caffeine lingers longer than you think
A cup of tea or coffee late in the day can affect your sleep more than it seems. As a general rule, try to finish your last caffeinated drink before early evening so it has time to clear your system before bed. And if you're reaching for decaf as a workaround, remember decaf isn't caffeine-free — it just has less of it.
Screen glare confuses your body clock
Phones, tablets, and laptops all give off artificial light that mimics sunlight, which can trick your brain into thinking it's still daytime. That's part of why scrolling before bed can leave you feeling wide awake with your mind racing, even when you're exhausted. Stepping away from screens for the last hour before bed gives your brain time to recognize that it's time to wind down.
Dry eyes can masquerade as tiredness
If you spend a lot of your day looking at a screen for work, what feels like tiredness is sometimes simply dry eyes. Before assuming you need a nap, try eye drops and see whether that clears up the heavy, tired feeling.
Building better sleep habits
Most adults do best with around eight hours of sleep. If you're consistently getting more or less than that, setting a consistent wake-up time can help reset your body's rhythm — and a more regular sleep schedule tends to pay off with more energy, a clearer mind, and more time in your day. If fatigue persists despite good sleep habits, it's worth talking to a professional, and our team at Empower Physical Therapy & Wellness is happy to help you figure out what else might be going on.
