Feeling stiff first thing in the morning isn't limited to athletes coming off a hard workout — it's a common complaint even for people who don't play sports at all. One patient put it simply: she felt stiff every day, in a way that made it harder to do things as easily as she'd like.
The instinct to rest is usually the wrong one
A common assumption is that if you're stiff, you should rest until it passes. In practice, it's usually the opposite: movement, not rest, is what keeps stiffness from settling in. That doesn't mean an intense daily workout — gentle, consistent movement is enough to make a real difference.
Swimming
Swimming a few times a week offers a simple, low-impact way to keep joints moving. It's especially helpful for people who also deal with arthritis, since stopping or slowing down tends to make that pain worse. Even treading water for a few minutes provides some of the same benefit.
Stretching
Stretching brings oxygen to your muscles, supporting easier movement and better flexibility over time. Aiming for around seven minutes in the morning and seven minutes before bed can help ease stiffness and support better sleep.
Walking
Walking doesn't need to mean a hike or getting out of breath — adding it into your everyday routine is enough. Taking phone calls while walking instead of sitting down, for example, is a simple way to add extra steps without carving out separate time for exercise.
Watch how much you sit
Avoiding long stretches of sitting matters just as much. If you do need to sit for a while, stretching out fully rather than staying upright in a chair gives your muscles and joints more relief. The body isn't designed for long periods of sitting, and stretching afterward helps offset that.
When to see a physical therapist
Everyday stiffness is easy to accept as something that just happens, but leaving it unaddressed tends to make it worse over time. If stiffness in your neck, shoulders, or back is affecting your daily routine, a physical therapist can help you build a movement plan that actually eases it. Our team at Empower Physical Therapy & Wellness works with patients across Chino Hills, Chino, and Pomona on exactly this kind of care.
